Outsmarting your brain - Try it

How smart is your right foot?

While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and makeclockwise circles.
Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.
Your foot will change direction.
Try to outsmart your foot. Good luck.

Teachers We have Known - The Good the Bad and the Ugly

We all have different memories of our teachers. Sam and others have written extensively about some. Please relate your experiences with these teachers, and any others you want to add. You can add your experiences as a comment against each teacher. If many do this, we can preserve memories of teachers which will otherwise be lost, and also get a more complete picture of each teacher.

Tech Support

Problem:
Last year I upgraded GirlFriend 1.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new programme began unexpected child processing and took up a lot of space and value resources. No mention of this phenomenon was included in the product brochure. In addition Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programmes and launches during system initialisation where it monitors all other systems actively. Applications such as PokerNight 10.3 and BeerBash 2.5 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected. I cannot seem to purge Wife 1.0 from my system. I am thinking of going back to GirlFriend 1.0 but un-install does not work on this programme.

Solution:
This is a very common problem men complain about. It is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many people upgrade from GirlFriend 1.0 to Wife 1.0 with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a ‘UTILITIES & ENTERTAINMENT’ programme. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by its creator to run everything. WARNING! DO NOT TRY TO UN-INSTALL. DELETE or PURGE the programme from the system once installed. Trying to un-install or remove Wife 1.0 can be disastrous. Doing so may destroy your hard and/or floppy drive, and valuable system resources. You cannot go back to GirlFriend 1.0 because Wife 1.0 is not configured to do this. Some have tried to install GirlFriend 2.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system. Look in your manual under Warnings-alimony/Child Support. Others have tried to run GirlFrieng 1.0 in the background, while Wife 1.0 is running. Eventually Wife 1.0 detects GirlFriend 1.0 and a system conflict occurs. This can lead to a non-recoverable system crash. Some users have tried to download similar shareware products such as Fling and 1 NiteStand. Often their systems have become infected with a virus. I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and just deal with the situation. Having installed Wife 1.0 myself, I suggest you read the entire section regarding General Protection Faults (GPFs). You must assume responsibility for all faults and problems that occur. The best course of action is to push Apologise button, then Reset button as soon as lock-up occurs. The system will run smoothly as long as you take the blame for all GPFs. Wife 1.0 is a great programme but is very high maintenance. Further suggestions for improved operation of Wife 1.0 are, a) Run utilities such as TLC and FTD every two weeks; b) Frequently use Communicator 5.0. Happy computing.

Remember ??.....the Wild Guys

Besides Jala Hutana and Chaman Amarasekara, we had 2 other amazing guys in Class.

1. Michelle Walpola, alias Wal Balla. Used to have his hair glued back with neatly trimmed mutton-chops to give the 'Elvis Presley' look. Commonly seen in while shirt and white pants, sleeves rolled up beyond his biceps so he could expose them and frighten the hell out of anyone who would challenge him. Rifky hated this high handed attitude of Mike. Almost exploded into a fight on several occasions.Had a habit of pulling down his pants, stamp one foot on a chair and expose his more than normal sack of testicles, which he used to contract and release to the amazement of most guys. If you have seen the testicles of an old grown bear...well that's how it looked. I wonder how it looks now, after so much wear and tear. Much much more about Mike, in college and out of college........too much to pen. Will give it out in bits and pieces, as and when I see it in my memory bank.

2. The other guy is none other than Ahamed Firoze Sameer, alias Sam the Man, alias Bond, James Bond 007. Seen most of the time with a stick of chalk between his fingers imagining it to be a fag, pulling on it with great satisfaction, arms thrown out to increase the width of his torso and head propped out to give that vulture look. Always clean shaven with hair neatly combed back. Had not much of a body, but used to roll his sleeves right up to expose his tiny biceps. Loved to imagine he is James Bond. Sometimes seen with a Gal Siyambala gun in his side pocket (holster) and would imagine it is his
Colt .38 Magnum \Special. Sam & Mike used to get on on well, like Dr.No and Bond, until I remember one day when Sam was at the entrance of the class posing off as Bond and doing a Bond act. Here comes Mike Walpola, steaming into the class like a battle ship and pushed Sam away with his mighty \narm. Sam ended up on a desk. I remember very well, how Sam, with his face down, eyes wide open looking straight up at Mike (characteristic 'SAM' look) and cursing under his breath " I WILL KILL THAT BUGGER SOME DAY". ...Sam I am sure you remember this.

More, to come.....on the Seethala Kotiyas like Whoppy and Omar. Whoppy is the only guy who went to jail. Izza, it was because of you...last day of O/L exam.Whoppy, remember your 'Uncle' and the Standard Enzine Car (get away car). Is he still there or dead.Remember our famous trip to Yala. Can someone come up with what we used to do with Omar in his VW Beetle.Cheers. See you over the Royal Thomian weekend. All must come."

Royal Thomian - Memories

Royal Thomian 2006....We have come a long way from the last Royal Thomian match we went to, whilst still being in College.

I think it was 1968. The Truck was organized. A trip to Kandana about 2 weeks before the match to book the St.John’s Papare band. (St.John’s Papare band is a part of St.John’s Funeral Undertakers. They are good at playing ‘Sad’ beats at funerals as well as Hi Tempo stuff with all the Godly Kunuharapas played only for the Devils.) Fancy dresses all arranged. I stole my grandpa’s wedding tail jacket. Chaman’s beetroot wine well matured in the Chemistry lab closely guarded by Lab-boy. All girlfriends in various schools informed of our Truck Parade’s ETA. Hat collections done and enough cash to go through 2 days of double distilled fun.

Before day one of the match was the traditional Cycle Parade. All assembled at Reid Avenue late evening in their bicycles and candle lanterns. A Truck at the front with a Papare Band in attendance. At least 250 cycles with lantern burning in an orderly arrangement was an extraordinary sight. The atmosphere was electric. Here we go, first with a thundering hoot...’ADDOOOOO BELLLAAAAA’. This I believe was the traditional expression of gratitude to the grand old man who had the Hostel as his life time abode. On we went on the city tour with the band drumming up ‘AYAMMAGE DOUBLE THANAI, AYAMMAGE DOUBLE THANAI, AYAMMAGE DOUBLE THANAI MIRIKUWAMA RUBBERR WAGAI......, singing the College song and screaming THORA PARIPPU !!! This was an event much awaited by the residents of Colombo city. The streets were lined with many well wishers, old, young and the mostly the pretty ones to join in the fun and cheer us through. Meanwhile, a couple of ‘bottles’ were passed down the procession like a baton being passed down a relay team.
The procession was suppose to end up at Reid Avenue, but some dropped off at Saraswathie for a quick Thosai and Masala Wadai. Most of the food served was complementary, as it was not paid for. Had to wind up early that night because we had a long day awaiting us.

Hardly slept that night. Had to get up at 4 am, get my old Land Rover started and rush to Kandana to pick up the St.John’s Papare Band. I can’t remember who came with me, but Izza was there for sure. On the way we had to collect a few bottles of Dankotuwa Hooch to fuel the band boys. Rushed back to college where the Truck was ready for embarkment. Boys gave us a warm welcome with a sip off the bottle. Chaman’s wine was opened and passed around which vanished faster that it appeared. Having no effect from the wine, my good pal Izza and I decided to borrow a cycle and ‘double’ to Colpetty Tavern via 5th Lane. That was the time when the Distilleries Corp put out the famous 2/= Buddy arrack. Bought 2 and gulped it down neat, bottoms up, burning down the bloody gut. Back onto the cycle, doubled back, this time Izza on the seat and me on the bar. Coming down 5th Lane was bloody breezy and gave us that extra punch. Came out of 5th lane like a bullet and onto the Pemba roundabout, Izza pissed out and fell in the middle of the bloody road trying to negotiate the bend. Izza, self and the cycle...all flat out. We were ‘helped’ up and hoisted into the truck.

I remember there being at least 50 trucks, all lined up one behind the other, starting from Pemba roundabout and ending at the basket ball court end. There were about 3 Papare Bands, but our’s took center stage. All set, a cracker was lit; one, two, three .....’ADDOOOO BELLLAAAAAA’.
It was so loud and thunderous, I am sure it would have been heard down Galle road. (Another tradition tribute to our grand old man. I remember Bella acknowledging the hoot when he came to the first class after the match. I think he said ‘THANK YOU GENTLEMEN FOR THE WARM GREETINGS’ Correct me if this is wrong).

Off we went with the band drumming up HARRIMA LEDAK NEDA MACHAN HARIMA LEDAK NE......on our way past Ladies College, Bishops, Methodists, Holy Family, St.Pauls, Visaka and St.Bridetes. The girls came screaming out, defying the schools prefects, teachers and Sisters to give us a cheer. In some schools we saw very supportive teachers looking on while the girls came out to cheer us. This was done in great spirit, tradition and fun. I also remember Chaman exposing his bottom to the crown and receiving a henna hoot. Meanwhile, a couple of more ‘bottles’ went around. My eyes sight and hearing began to diminish due the excessive hooch in my system. There after, I really did not know what happened the rest of the day, till someone splashed a bucket of water on my face while I was cooling off beside the water tank, with good old Kadale having an eye over me. Day one was over. I think we went to the Light House to cool off and crept into home later in the day, after the home folks had retired.

Day 2 began the same way, but ended worse than day one. Didn’t miss the traditional visit to GREENLANDS for a quick shot from the bar and a hot thosai. This is from where Izza, Rafil and Jaldin collected their ever silver stainless steel cups. I am sure they still use it at home. Again, most of the food was complimentary because they were not paid for. Later, GREENLANDS gave us plastic cups instead of the regular stainless steel as most of the stainless steel cups went missing after the previous day’s visit. Another quicky from Ritz hotel, Borella, on our way to the Oval. We were virtually on our fours when we got to the Oval. Kadale was at the entrance making sure that we got in without any harassment from the ticket checkers.

This was one the worst days in my life in College. Something happened during the lunch interval when someone hit my good pal Fi. Thereafter, we went looking for the guy and ended up hammering about a dozen guys. Are you there Fi.....Machan, who hit you.....can you show me the fellow..... Each time Fi suspects someone, he would point him out and this poor bugger gets hammered. I remember hitting a fellow so hard that he got airborne and ended up on the barbed wire fens. Another fellow tapped me on the shoulder to ask me for a ‘light’. I turned around and hit the bugger so hard, he fell flat on the ground. I was like King Kong marauding the grounds and getting rid of anyone who looked suspicious. All this because of Fi. Fortunate to have the fullest backing of the clan who had circled me and protected me from any harm. Sam...thanks...the look on your face made anyone who had ideas to flee the scene. Fi was so pissed out, he seemed to enjoy the episode at my cost. I don’t know how it ended, but found myself at home when I woke the next afternoon. I faintly remember a trip to Light House as well.

More episodes and additions would be appreciated. As for me, I was very little in this world during the 2 days of the most important event in the Calender of Royal College.

Love you guys.....Moin

Toilets in Trains

This is an amazing yet true incident without which travel on trains in India would be a different ball game altogether. Toilets were introduced on Indian trains only after a passenger Okhil Chandha Sen wrote a letter in 1909 to the Sahibganj Divisional Office complaining about how he missed the train when he got down to answer the call of nature. The Times of India recently reproduced the unedited letter:

Dear Sir,
I am arrive by passenger from Ahmedpur station and my belly too much swelling with Jack Fruit. I am therefore went to privy. Just I am doing the nuisance that gaurd making whistle blow for train to go off and I am running with ‘lotta’ in one hand and ‘dhoti’ in the next hand when I fall over and expose all my shocking to man and female woman on platform. This too much bad if passenger go to make dung that dam gaurd not wait train for five minutes for me. I am therefore pray your honour to make big fine on that gaurd for public sake. Otherwise I am making big reports to papers.
Yours faithfully
Okhil Chandha

For the Indian-English uninitiated, 'lotta' is a mug and 'dhoti' is the Indian version of the sarong.
