Priorities

Get your priorities right! When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar...and the 2 cups of coffee......

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and emptied them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open spaces between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the gaps. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes." The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, " I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things-your God, family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions-things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car.The sand is everything else-the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal." Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend"
Please share this with those you care about. I just did, and please dont forget to make sure you take care of the golfballs first ,then everything else just falls into place behind them.

FORMER UNP MAYOR TO RUN COLOMBO CITY

Daily Mirror: Tuesday, April 18, 2006 front page:

In a surprise move the Local Government and Provincial Councils Ministry has appointed former UNP’s Colombo Mayor Omar Kamil as the Special Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council.

The gazette notification confirming the appointment was expected to be issued last night while Mr Kamil told the Daily Mirror he was hoping to receive the letter of appointment today.

This was a surprise move as the Ministry had earlier decided not to appoint a Special Commissioner and to allow the present Municipal Commissioner Dr Jayantha Liyanage to take over after the Council was dissolved on Friday.

Meanwhile former Colombo Mayor Prasanna Gunawardene and the Deputy Mayor Azath Sally were reported to have vacated their offices on Saturday.

It was when Mr Kamil served as Colombo’s Mayor from 1999 to 2002 that the Colombo City was named the best city in the Asia Pacific Region by the International Conference of Mayors of Asia Pacific.

He had served the Council as a member from 1979 to 2000 and as Deputy Mayor from 1999 to 2000.

PEOPLE COME INTO YOUR LIFE FOR A REASON

Recent unusually meditative and nostalgic email sent by Chaman A. -

I am sending this to you to see how many actually read their email. Your response will be interesting.Pay attention to what you read. After you have finished reading it, you will know the reason it was sent to you.

Here goes:

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide y ou with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.!

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.

Send this to every friend that you have online, including the person who sent it to you.

0 Replies - you may need to work on your "peopleskills"
2 Replies - you are nice but probably need to bemore outgoing 4 Replies - you have picked your friends well
6 Replies - you are downright popular
8 Replies or More - you are totally awesome (andthat's probably why you're on MY list)

I wonder what mine will be.

Driving in Sri Lanka

Posted on behalf of Moin Ahmed. Wish him many happy years of driving.

Driving in Sri Lanka Heart rending, hilarious, exhilarating, always unforgettableIt has been said that many atheists have come to Sri Lanka, only to return firm believers in God, after having been on our roads for just a few weeks. Does this mean that we are a highly spiritual people, or is there something spiritual in our driving style? The Highway CodeDriving on our roads imparts one with an almost hallucinatory potion of sound, spectacle and experience. It is frequently heart-rending, sometimes hilarious, mostly exhilarating but always unforgettable and, when you are on the roads, extremely dangerous. Most surviving drivers observe a secret Highway Code. There is no printed version. You learn only by a hands-on experience. Like any other specialised craft, it could be learnt only by doing.Of course, during the learning process, there are in-built occupational hazards, like minor and major accidents including death.Let me share with you a few tricks of the trade I have learned myself, that may help you to survive while driving in Sri Lanka.Once you get over the initial fear of death, driving in Sri Lanka is really quite amazing. To be precise, it is an art form and talent possessed by only a selected few. To be even more precise, it's better than any roller coaster ride in the States.Drive on the left or right of the road? The answer is "both". Basically, you start on the left of the road unless it is occupied. In that case, go to the right, unless that too is occupied. Then proceed by occupying the next available gap between vehicles.Driving techniques? Just trust your instincts, aim your vehicle in the intended direction and press the accelerator to the floor board with both hands on horn. If you're destined to get there, you will. Adherence to colonial road rules leads to much misery and the occasional fatality.Don't stop at pedestrian crossings just because some fool wants to cross the road! You may do so only if you enjoy being bumped in the rear. Pedestrians have been strictly instructed to cross only when traffic has come to a dead stop. Still some idiot may try to wade across, but then, let us not talk ill of the dead.Overtaking is mandatory. Every moving vehicle is required to overtake every other moving vehicle, irrespective of whether it has just overtaken you.Overtaking should only be undertaken in suitable conditions, such as in the face of oncoming traffic, on blind bends, at junctions and in the middle of towns or city centres. Take NO notice of signal indicators as these are meant to function from the time the ignition is on till the end of the journey! No more than two inches should be allowed between your vehicle and the one you are passing and one inch in the case of bicycles or pedestrians.Blowing your horn is not a sign of protest as in some countries. We horn for many reasons (which are indigenous to Sri Lanka).Short blasts: (urgent) indicate supremacy: (overtaking one to three vehicles ahead of you and clearing three-wheelers and pedestrians from your path)Long blasts: (desperate) denote supplication: (To the oncoming car "I am going too fast to stop, so unless you slow down we shall both die"). In extreme cases this may be accompanied by flashing of headlights (frantic).Single blast: "I have seen someone out of our 19 million whom I managed to recognise", or "I have not blown my horn for several minutes."Special note:In the case of buses, all horn signals have the same meaning: "I have an all-up weight of approximately 12.5 tons and have no intention of stopping, even if I could." This signal may be emphasized by the use of headlamps.Rights of way: Traffic entering a road from the left has priority. So has traffic from the right, and also traffic in the middle.Lane discipline: All traffic at all times and irrespective of direction of travel shall occupy whatever lanes they prefer. Its open market policy.Roundabouts: These & Clock Towers were built by the late president Premadasa to beautify the cities and have no traffic management function. Any other impression should be ignored.Night driving: In Sri Lanka this can be an exhilarating experience (for those with the mental make up of Genghis Khan). In a way, it's like playing Russian roulette, because you don't know who amongst the drivers is loaded. What looks like premature dawn on the horizon turns out to be a container truck attempting a speed record. On encountering it, just pull partly into the field adjoining the road until the phenomenon passes. Do not blink your lights to buses expecting reciprocation. The only dim thing in an oncoming bus is its driver and the peg of illicit arrack he has had at the last stop; his total cerebral functions add up to little more than a naught.Remember - these bus drivers are the James Bonds of Sri Lanka and are licensed to kill. Often you may encounter a single powerful beam of light about six feet above the ground. This is not a super motorbike, but a bus approaching you with a single light on, usually the left one. It could be the right one, but never get too close to investigate. You may prove your point posthumously!Postscript:The moral of these findings is that the unpublished Sri Lankan road rules broadly operate within the spiritual domain of karma where you do your best and leave the results to your insurance company or, better still, your friendly undertaker

.......................
Rifky,

Can you please post a comment on your 1961 Groupies Blogger requesting anyone who has a pic of Kadalay to come forward and publish it on the blog. In case no one does then is there someone artistically skilled enough to draw a caricature of the grand ole man. I would like to have a copy please for the Kadalay blog.

I have put a link to Eardley Lieversz great story on Kadalay on the Kadalay of Royal blog. And thanks very much for putting a link to the Kadalay Blog on the 1961 Groupies blog.
